Taiwan is a small island off the shore of mainland China. While Taiwan has many orphanages for able-bodied children, there is an extreme lack of orphanages designed to house special needs children. If a child has severe special needs or eats through a feeding tube, orphanages in Taiwan are not equipped to take that child. These children, once able to leave the hospital, are then placed in nursing homes with the elderly population.
We experienced this firsthand, with Keaton. After living his first year of life in the hospital, he was placed in a nursing home for the next 2 1/2 years. A nursing home is not a place for young child with special needs to be able to learn and grow to their fullest potential. There are not resources and therapies available for orphans who are being placed in nursing homes that are not equipped for them.
The abortion rate is astronomical in Taiwan. Per The Gospel Herald, “According to estimates by the Taiwan medical society, there were 160,000 new born babies in Taiwan last year and there could be as many as 500,000 cases of abortions each year, which tripled the number of newborns.” The Bible tells us, “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” Psalm 127:3. We want to come alongside expectant mothers and encourage them to give their child the gift of life. Help them understand how precious their child is and how God has a purpose and plan for each and every person.
Keaton’s Angel Homes in Taitung, Taiwan, will be a place that welcomes all special needs children. Every child, no matter where they are born, what their special needs are, or how long the Lord has planned for them here on earth, deserves to feel God’s love from God’s people.
